When you begin a sign marketing campaign, you have to factor in many variables, but perhaps the most important of them is designing a professional-looking sign. There is a possibility of making your sign too busy and also a possibility of making it not stand out at all. Achieving the right balance between these while conveying your brand and message can be tricky, but start with these guidelines to get an idea of how to get there:

1. Layout

You need to convey your message in a limited amount of time, so keep your layout straightforward and emphasize what is most important. Use larger sized lettering for the central point of your sign, whether it's your company name or the services you offer. Don't try to cram a whole lot of information onto the sign because people won't have the time (or the patience) to read your sign for very long. Get to the point quickly.

2. Color

Chances are that if you own a business, you have a color set that people associate your business with, so you should use those colors. If you plan to put your logo on the sign, remember that you want your brand to stand out, so the logo's background should wash out the logo itself. So for example, if you logo is primarily red, you don't want to put it on a red background because that will make it difficult to recognize. Lastly, it's typically advisable to limit the colors on your sign to two or three in order to make your sign look clean and professional.

3. Size

The size of your sign is important for a few reasons. First, and most obvious, is that you want your sign to be large enough that people can see it. Another reason is out of consideration for your clients or supporters. If you're planning on having these signs on other people's lawns, say if you run a home services business or are running for office, you don't want them to be an eyesore. Finally, some towns have restrictions against the size of signs you can have on your property. Find out what the local laws are for sign placements to make sure that you signs are within the regulations.

4. Miscellaneous Options

There are a number of other options available when designing a sign that you might need to consider. Do you need a directional sign? Make sure the arrows are pointed in the right direction. Do you expect people to see your sign from both sides? What's the weather like in your area? There are several options for weather resistance, even including ink considerations. Supercheapsigns.com's staff of experienced sign designers that can help you throughout this process.

Though sign design can be a tricky process to go through, these guidelines should give you a basis for designing a professional-looking sign.
