The May 2012 unemployment rate for the State of Arizona stayed at 8.2%. This continues a pattern for AZ of no monthly unemployment rate increases in 2012. The rate's not the whole story, however, since the actual number of unemployed workers increased for May by about 1000. The number of employed individuals and the number in the total civilian workforce for Arizona also increased for the month. The net effect was the static unemployment rate for May.

In a year-over-year comparison, the May 2012 unemployment rate of 8.2% significantly improved from the May 2011 rate of 9.6%. The net impact of this big improvement is that Arizona has approximately 44,000 less people unemployed in May 2012 than were reported in May 2011. An additionally impact is that number of employed workers in Arizona has also increase by over 23,000 while the civilian workforce has actually gone down by approximately 20,000 people. The combination of these statistics is our (big) 1.4% decrease in the Arizona unemployment rate over the past year.

Compared to the national average, Arizona's May 2012 unemployment rate matches the national average at 8.2%. A small difference is while the national average went up from May (by 0.1%), Arizona's rate remained flat for the month.

Some of Arizona's industries that saw employment improvements for May 2012 included Financial Activities, Construction, Professional and Business Services, Mining & Logging, and Manufacturing. Some industries did experience a downturn in May including Information, Leisure & Hospitality, and Other Services.

All of the Arizona cities that the U.S Department of Labor reporting results on show higher unemployment rates for may 2012. Lake Havasu City increased from 8.8% to 9.5% (it's first monthly increase for 2012). Flagstaff's unemployment rate rose from 7.3% to 7.7% for the month. The City of Tuscon also rose from 6.6 to 7.2% in May. The Phoenix Metropolitan Area's rate also went up to 7.2% and Prescott rose up to 8.5%. The City of Yuma, already with the highest city unemployment rate in Arizona saw it's already (very) high rate of 26% for April rise to a staggering 28.9% for May 2012.

Compared to other states in the region, Arizona's 8.2% rate continues to be around the middle. On the high-side, both Nevada (10.6%) and California (10.8%) continue to experience much higher unemployment rates than AZ. On the lower side, the States of New Mexico (6.7%), Utah (6.0%), and Colorado (8.1%) all have lower unemployment rates.

In about a month we'll revisit Arizona when the June unemployment statistics are published. We'll once again review the numbers for Arizona's cities, business sectors, and place in the region, as well as observe overall trends for the state. Be aware that previously published unemployment numbers from the DOL may be updated that a later date.
