Self help books have leapt in popularity over recent years, but why is this? For a start, these days it is no longer considered unusual to consider one's personal development. Furthermore, it is becoming more and more common to actively look for help when we feel lost or inadequate about ourselves.

Because of this, there is a large array of subjects that fit within the personal development grouping. However not all of these are focused on personal well-being. Wellbeing is merely one example of a sizable variety of different categories that are incorporated within the realm of self help. For instance publications dealing with wealth creation, effective communication, motivational advice and even public speaking can be found alongside books concerning phobias or meditation techniques. A number of these alternative therapies come under a sub-genre of self help, termed as Mind, Body & Spirit in most popular bookshops.

In any event, the uniting factor between every one of these books is that they basically attempt to supply a system to a better life. All the same, it's actually dependent on each book's author, as to whether they recognize an improved life as that which happens through enhancements inside of the individual - essentially the internal thought processes. Such methodology would be termed as psychology or "pop psychology" as it's often called.

So what is pop psychology? Well, you've probably heard the likes of it on daytime television shows and in womens magazines. It is also known as folk psychology and basically refers to well worn "scientific" sound bites which have little to no empirical data to substantiate them. Because of its simplistic nature, pop psychology can become easily accepted into the public consciousness, but receive scorn from science quarters. But professionals can be overly irreverent towards alternative therapies simply because their underlying roots aren't in science even though the principles guiding them are valid.

Additionally, it's not a hard and fast rule for self help books to utilize this viewpoint. Although one will not find an exact definition concerning the title self help, the motifs it concerns derive not only from pop psychology, but additionally personal development. Hence there's commonly an underlying philosophical standpoint in a lot of the self help books out there.
