When you're looking for a sign language interpreter, know what to look for. Suppose you're a lawyer, looking to depose someone with a hearing problem or get a sworn statement from a deaf witness. You might need such an expert for a particular public event such as a school event, a public play or performance, or even a political occasion.

The one doing the interpretation should be familiar with these arts, and of course completely fluent in interpreting languages. Undergraduate programs are available for these interpreters, some of which lead to a two-year or four-year degree or certificate in the field. Verify the interpreter's academic skills.

It's the job of the interpreter to ensure that their audience doesn't just get a linguistically perfect explanation. They also need to convey any hidden meanings in their phrases. For instance, they must be able to get across the tone of the message and any emotion in the message as part of their translation.

Sometimes in sign languages, there is no exact word or phrase to match the translation. In this case the interpreters work harder to ensure the message is conveyed accurately. The translator must be careful that they don't change the message for their audience.

In these cases, the training becomes significant. They spend long periods of time talking to the hearing impaired. This allows them to go beyond literal translation.

In choosing a sign language interpreter, you want to do more than check credentials. Obviously, you want to be sure they have the necessary education to do the job. But you also want to find someone intuitive and empathetic so they can bring a more complete understanding to the task.
