Most living creatures are subject to stress in the course of their lives. Probably some measure of stress is essential but too much is damaging. A good education is to a large extent a process of learning how to manage stress through learning ways to express yourself.

Anger is a violent form of expression that can have terrible consequences. Usually an angry outburst occurs after a long struggle to maintain control of emotions that simmer slowly like embers that can suddenly flame up at a slight provocation. Like a fire, rage feeds on itself furiously for a while and then tends to die away because it has consumed what fed it.

Catharsis is a well known psychological effect that is well documented in fiction and in fact. It takes the form of violent expression followed by a period of calm or resignation. That is preferable to both the stress and the violent outburst, but if the initial cause of the stress has not been removed a slow built up can begin again after the temporary relief.

At its best education is not primarily about academic examinations but about teaching young people the life skills that they need to live without rising stress and loss of emotional control. In the best schools and education systems games serve this purpose. Sport is healthy physically and mentally.

Stress is not only physical but also mental. For that reason the best schools balance games with cultural activities such as debating, drama, or charitable events. A person who has been introduced to music will have a means of calm expression for life. Such life skills will also equip them to manage stress and develop strategies for coping with the inevitable vicissitudes of life.

There are very many ways to express yourself but for some psychologists there is one fundamental trait that is necessary across the whole diversity of human activities. What some people call metaphor is fundamental to literature. Without metaphor a person is trapped in the concrete. With it there is a way out from the concrete to the abstract. Music ceases to be a mere string of sounds but represents an idea. A race is no longer merely running, but running for a purpose.
