A submersible utility pump is a useful and versatile tool. A submersible pump is often hired by people who have a flooded basement or who need their pool emptying out. Some purchase one and permanently install it into their gardens where they experience regular flooding. Basically, a submersible pump is placed in an area of water and it pumps that water away.

The pump itself is mechanical, but it is encased in a waterproof box and uses a hose to send water to an outfall area. Naturally, different brands of pumps look and feel differently, but they all essentially operate in the same manner.

Installing a pump isn't too difficult, thankfully. However, before purchasing or renting a centrifugal pump, you need to be well prepared. Preparation is always the key to a successful job. You should first consider where you will place you outfall. The location of your outfall is very important so that you don't cause a flood in another area. A good area for an outfall would be a drain or sewer or a grassy slope. Here, the water would slowly drain into the ground.

Next, you need to consider the distance between the outfall and your pump, so you are able to get the correct length of hose. Then you are ready to actually order your pump. The hose then needs to be connected to the pump and the pump needs to be connected to the power source. Find what the lowest point is in the area you want to drain, as this is where you will be placing your pump. Do also use a filter to keep the rubble out of your pump.

There are a few things you need to think about. If you look on Hertz Equip, the first thing you will notice is that pumps are all electrical. Because electricity and water should not mix, you need to make sure that you follow the instructions thoroughly. You may wonder how something electrical can come into contact with water, since it is a pump, but this is made possible through the housing discussed earlier.

Watch out that you don't allow the pump runs completely dry, since this could burn out the mechanism. Make sure, therefore that you switch the pump off before the water has been completely drained. One way to make sure you don't have to keep watching the pump is by opting for one with a float, which starts up and cuts off automatically when the water reaches a certain level.
