At some stage in our lives, most of us will need to cope with difficult individuals, especially in the office. Difficult folks will usually express themselves and respond in a manner that negatively impacts the rights of other people, and when you neglect to stand up for yourself then they will walk all over you.

While it may be challenging to even consider standing up to a difficult co-worker, it's a lot worse to deal with it for extended periods of time. The more let them exploit you, the more harshly they'll behave towards you due to the fact that they know that is successful. On the other hand, when you confront them by asserting yourself, it indicates that you are deserving of their respect and also that you won't be used.

Assertiveness Methods For Handling Aggressive People

Here are several assertiveness techniques that will make it easier for you to cope with aggressive individuals:

1. Start From A Position Of Strength

What many people don't know about difficult colleagues is the fact that these people are really severely lacking in self-confidence. As a result, they attempt to hide their self-doubts by being difficult and controlling towards other folks. Rather than seeing these individuals as a daunting threat, think of these folks as a naughty kid making an outburst to get a hold of what they desire. Simply by making this little mental alteration, you can tackle any future conflict from a position of strength instead of weakness.

2. Stay Calm And Sensible

The absolute worst reaction you can have with a difficult colleague is to lose your senses and react in an aggressive way as well. Instead of permitting their actions to incite you, make it a point to stay relaxed and with your wits about you. Breathe deeply and slowly and collect your emotions before responding. In doing so, you'll manage to think more clearly and rationally.

3. Do Not Be Afraid To Question Them

In conclusion, one of the most effective assertiveness techniques around for handling aggressive people is Negative Inquiry. Negative Inquiry means getting the aggressive colleagues to explain a statement by using a question. Here's an illustration of Negative Inquiry:

Pete: You're so irresponsible!

Jill: How exactly am I irresponsible?

By questioning the initial remark and not plain challenging it, you reduce the pressure in the confrontation. In addition, the other individual must now make a case for themselves to you, instead of you needing to justify yourself to them.
