There are many reasons why WordPress makes the ideal CMS (content management system) to help you build a potentially successful site. I'll run through just a few of them here. For starters, WordPress is "open source" software, which means you can use it for free. Geeks (and others) will know that it's constructed utilizing PHP - which is a computer language - and MySQL, a database management system. But don't panic, unless you choose to get your fingers dirty in coding, you don't need to know hope it all functions.

The stats are always changing, but it has been estimated that WordPress powers coming up to 20% of the websites in the world. That is a huge amount of websites. The WordPress download button has been accessed something like 30 million times. This means that if something should break down on your site (which it probably won't), there are a lot of people out there who can help you fix it. You can reach some of them via numerous forums and user groups that exist for WordPress.

WordPress is an almost automatic system that is perfect for both beginners and experts. You can install the basic version with just one click, but if you feel the desire to get into web coding, the option's there for you. Another wonderful thing about Wordpress is that it's difficult to break provided you keep away from the files containing the computer code, which are contained in files accessible by the Editor.

The main function of WordPress is as blogging tool, but it has grown into a catch-all CMS that lets you make a website look just about any way you want it to. This is achieved by the tens of thousands (maybe even hundreds of thousands by now) of themes that are available. Themes let users change the functionality and look of a WordPress website without altering or messing up the content you've added. Themes can be added via the Wordpress Dashboard, or by uploading it via your usual FTP application. Many are available for free, others might cost anything up to $497. Premium themes I personally appreciate include Thesis, Sozan, Socrates and Modernize.

It appears that WordPress websites are loved by Google and Bing and the simple act of using WordPress appears to give you an advantage when it comes to getting high rankings in the search engines. The way WordPress is made means that you can optimize your site quite simply by using in-built components like pinging, making use of heading tags such as H1, H2, H3, and so on, getting stuck into categories and 'tagging', and by the use of keywords in your meta tags. Every one of these is already included as part of the basic infrastructure of WordPress.

On top of that there are WordPress Plug-ins that let you to extend your site's capabilities much further than the basic features will allow. WordPress has a stock of over seventeen and a half thousand plugins performing a wealth of tasks ranging from adding a shopping cart to your site, including Facebook "likes" and building a Google sitemap, to displaying a form that will enable people top sign up to a mailing list and checking for broken links. Their sheer scope seems to be infinite.
