In a recent study of over 4,000 patients who were treated by doctors whose primary focus was on reducing the risk of stroke while primarily focusing on the risk factors that would cause a stroke, such as smoking, diabetes, and high cholesterol; over the course of five years the study found that the patients greatly reduced their need for long-term care drop by about 12 percent compared with another 13,000 patients nearby who did not receive care focused on these preventive health care conditions. "We found that not only the risk of long-term care dependence was lower, but there was also a decrease in the death rates associated with a stroke," claims Juana Davis, the study's lead author.
Many doctors are on board with health care prevention- also called routine care; as this helps your doctor track or prevent problems before they become serious. As soon as you join a health plan check out several medical facilities and choose a doctor whom you will be comfortable with for a long time, schedule a new-patient appointment and get to know the doctor. Different people need different types of doctors it is ok to look around until you find the doctor and or facility you like. It is important that you are comfortable with your doctor as you will share your age, and any health problems you may have.

Being enrolled in a health care plan is a wonderful thing when things run smoothly however there are many members that started out with only a little enrollment pain only to find out 6 months to a year later that they have been dropped or let a gap fall in their policy that makes the "band-aid" process start all over again.

If your doctor fails to ask you questions about your lifestyle such as exercise, smoking, drinking, diet, and any emotional problems then he/she certainly won't dive into a families medical history, this might be a good warning sign that this might not be the right doctor for you. Some doctors think they only need to treat an illness not prevent it, as counseling takes time, however preventive health care will save you thousands of dollars, and who wants to go through the serious side affects of an illness when the illness could have been prevented.

You and only you can take care of yourself; be responsible for managing your own pre-preventive care, choose a qualified doctor who meets all your needs- it will be the most important investment you can make for both your time and money. If you are not sure which medical facilities are in your area call your health plan they can not only give you facility addresses but talk to you about the medical staff there- age, gender, years of practice, or doctors specialty. You may want to check out the medical facility before you schedule an appointment, or talk with the check-in clerk to find out who's most available for last minute appointments if time is a concern.

Adults who have continuous health care coverage typically create a relationship with their doctor but those patients who experience gaps in their coverage are less likely to have a regular doctor to do preventive care visits, and often dismiss health conditions that would cause a medical professional concern.

You can also take steps starting today to insure a healthier life just by eating healthy, not smoking, and avoiding second hand smoke. Get regular exercise, and avoid long periods of sitting in the sun. Take care of your body by keeping it clean and your teeth brushed and flossed daily. These daily tasks seem like such little things but by keeping your body clean you are keeping many potentially harmful germs away.

Navigating through the health care system is never going to be easy as policy changes are in constant motion, however the "ouch" of enrollment doesn't' have to begin at all if you choose to work with a health advocate. With free advocacy, Social Service Coordinators helps health plans gain a deep understanding of the health of their members in order to bring together the right benefits, and the right care. There is no reason to have any gaps in your health insurance, and don't stay in a band-aided situation where you are doing all the research for a health plan only to find you don't qualify; have a health advocate do the work for you and keep your health insurance coverage on-going, which in turn will keep you on track for a healthy and active life.
