Various Cash Resources While Running a Video Business

by Kris Simmons

Every video business entrepreneur should know various cash resources to uphold the business and endure tough times when they happen.

What are these sources of income?

Source #1 - The End Client

If your video production caters to weddings or corporate events, you will always get your major source of income from an end client. The end client is defined to be someone who gets your services for their own benefit. They pay you with their own money. I think that 50% of your video business profit should generally come from these End Clients.

Source #2 - Creative Agencies

It may be difficult to produce video projects with promotional agencies. Still, you must try to have some kind of connection with them because they are another source of project to work on. In this situation, the agency agrees to work with the End client. The agency uses your services for the project that was agreed upon. The End client pays the promotional agency. After which, the agency sends you the money once you complete your services. These promotional agencies give you the chance to showcase your creative talent and provide a reasonable rate for your work.

In the wedding video arena, an agency might be a chapel or large wedding coordination company that provides turn-key services to brides and their families. In the corporate video arena, there are marketing, PR, advertising, interactive and website design agencies that will need to outsource professional video services to develop projects for End Clients.

Creative agencies may contribute 25% of your total video business income. This is a touch challenge to make. On the other hand, you can easily get some money this way if you properly networked with these agencies. This is a good source of cash when you get to a point where end clients aren't doing business with you.

Source #3 - Your fellow video business owners and videographers

Freelance videographers and producers are often neglected when it comes to finding sources of income. Even if you spend most of your time finding the right people to give you profit, you must also consider communicating with other video production owners and freelancers.

If you create a friendly relationship with everyone in your market, you'll never have to look for projects because they will come to your doorstep every time.

The most convenient way to earn money is by getting good relationships with people in your market as well as your competitors. Once a videographer is contacted by an end client but can't do services for them because he's got other projects to do, he will definitely refer you instead of leaving his client empty handed. This is a great way to get clients without having to do anything at all.

Also, in my extensive years of running my video business, there have been many times when I've had to rely on strategic partnerships with other videographers just to make ends meet. We'd both promote our services to the same clients while agreeing to give the other exclusive rights to be on the crew if and when a contract was signed. This doubled my chances of winning work whether I won the contract or not! Pulling $300 to $500 in a day back then was better than nothing. In many cases, it came just in time to put food on the table and to pay the rent.

Even now when most of my time is spent operating as the video producer/director, I still try to make sure 25% of my business revenues come from projects with other production companies.

If you know the various sources of your income, you will have more chances to be successful in your video business. It definitely worked for my career and I believe that it will work for you too.
