Nine Strategies to Boost Your Revenue on eBay

by Bob Garrett

According to popular belief - it's pretty easy to put items up for sale on eBay. What people find difficult is turning a profit. There is an ocean of competing products, plus product prices are aggressive and there are costs for each listing - even if no one buys your products.

Here's something I know with auction marketing, I've discovered a few easy tactics that make it easier for me to move my merchandise - plus get the attention of more bidders, which results in driving up the sales price. Taking advantage of these same tactics, you can see more bidders the next time you sell on eBay.

Let's get started. Here are the steps:

1. Ad Listing Titles Need to Be Descriptive

Some examples include brand names, model numbers, colors, sizes, abbreviations, etc.. Since the title space allows for a small amount of text, sellers have to come to a decision on which words will achieve the best results. Generally, adding more keywords can increase revenue, as this gives shoppers more opportunities to stumble across your ad.

2. Include Multiple Product Images

Pictures you want to include needs to give the visitor helpful information about the item you are selling. Great photos include front, back and side angles of the product listed and don't forget close-ups. You may decide that it's smart to show verification of brand name labeling with a photograph.

When using photographs, think about objections that viewers are most likely to have, and how photos can provide a solution those questions. The more queries you can answer - and trust you can build using your listing page - the more action-oriented visitors you will attract.

3. Offer Various Payment Options

Customers prefer to choose, and they don't want to be told what to do. Providing a variety of ways to pay is a very simple strategy to multiply the group of shoppers who take action on your listings. More bidders typically magically transforms into increased activity and more profitable bids.

4. Keep Shipping Low - or Free

Expensive shipping add-ons turn away customers - and inexpensive merchandise with costly shipping charges do not attract buyers. Unless merchandise is big and bulky, high shipping charges are not usually necessary.

Give the normal and least expensive rate you can charge, letting bidders decide if they want to pay additional costs for upgraded delivery options if they like. Free shipping is another simple way to bring in more people who will bid. Shoppers will increase their bids when they like that fact that they do not have any shipping fees to pay.

5. Accept Customer Returns (When Possible)

Usually shoppers don't try to request their money back for their purchase except for when it's definitely horrid. Hey - it's not convenient to take back purchases. So, making bidders aware up front that they can obtain a refund easily instills their trust in you ten-fold. It provides them one more excuse they should get products from you.

6. Get Positive Feedback from Buyers and Keep it at 100%

This might seem self-evident, but the crazy thing is that a large number of visitors don't remember to leave their comments. They dishearten sellers who have made their best effort to complete a successful and satisfactory transaction.

There is a quick strategy to increase the feedback you get.

First, when bidding has ended and a customer has paid for the merchandise, contact the customer by email. Make him/her aware of when the product will be mailed and when he will get the order. Include a note that you would really appreciate feedback when he receives the product.

Next, at the time the person should have received the product, send him another email. Tell him that you want to make sure he got the product and to let you know if he has concerns. Include a reminder that you're looking forward to his feedback. Then insert a link or details on leaving comments.

Make it easy to leave feedback, and these simple reminders should keep your positive feedback growing. Note that a majority of the time, people don't provide comments because they do not remember or they don't know the procedure.

7. Include a Complete Run-Down of the Product

Specific details give you a leg up in an auction listing. Some buyers require details while others do not, so it won't hurt to include as many specifics as possible in an easy-to-skim format. Implement numbered lists and spotlight necessary details for visitors who prefer to skim over the lengthy descriptions.

Another critical case for why you should add a lengthy write-up is to help your sales page get discovered by as many potential bidders as possible. When shoppers search for things on eBay, it's hard to predict which search terms they will insert. Therefore, the more labels you use on your product page that describe what's for sale, the more likely bidders are to locate your listing.

8. Don't Start the Bidding Too High

Buyers go to eBay when looking for to get something for cheap. Do not post products for only 5% off the retail price - give shopper a special that will get them excited. When you start your bids at next to nothing, the more shoppers will want to bid on your item. Of course, we all know what will happen next.

9. Select Your Auction Deadline Carefully

At the time you list your item, make sure that your sale will not expire at a date when many potential buyers are tied up or snoring soundly. I've actually gotten a number of amazing deals (as a buyer) on items where the completion of the auction was late on a Saturday. This suggested that other possible buyers was not bidding because people were pre-occupied on a Saturday night...
