Morse code is a system widely used since the 1800s as a method of communication by mariners, the military, radio operators and others. The system is based on a series of clicks, tones, lights or similar signaling device. The system uses standard series of long and short signals referred to as dashes and dots. These sequences can be used to signal one of the letters in the English alphabet, one of the ten numbers (from 0 to 9), or a small group of procedural and punctuation signals. The overall system is quite complex and needs significant effort in terms of memory and repetition to learn and retain. Morse code program packages are supplied by many alternative suppliers to facilitate this learning.

This software uses modern multi-media and video technology to produce effective teaching and learning tools. Using these tools, the software packages help students become proficient to both transmit and decode (receive) system communications. Additionally, the software makes it easier for existing practitioners to sharpen their knowledge and skills so as to shorten transmission and decoding times.

In terms of transmitting text, the packages can broadcast communications at the rate of 5 to 99 words per minute (WPM). This provides an excellent way for a person to practice decoding a communication. The packages also make available automatic marking for a type-written transcription.

Signals in the form of short or long dots or dashes are used to signal a letter, a number (from zero to nine), or a select group of punctuation. The time duration of a dot is the fundamental unit of time; it represents an important baseline. The duration of a dash is approximately three times the duration of a dot. A short period of silence follows every dot or dash. The length of this silence is about the duration of a dot. Similarly, every word is separated by a slightly longer silence equal to that of a dash.

For increased efficiency, the length of each character is inversely related to its frequency of usage in English. For example E, the most used letter, is represented by a single dot. Similarly the letter I, the next most commonly used letter, is represented by two dots. The letter S is represented by three dots and the letter T by one dash.

The software is designed to be dynamic and interactive. It allows students to pace their instruction according to their specific needs and abilities. The active interaction of students is required so as to increase learning effectiveness. Retention is improved since a student is able to repeatedly practice the system. Students are given instant feedback; this boosts motivation, provides positive reinforcement and hence promotes learning.

The software is suitable for both professional and amateur users. In addition to home-based enthusiasts, the software is used by many specialized organizations around the world. For example, several defense authorities use these packages including those in the USA, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada and New Zealand use this type of software to teach the system to its personnel.

Despite the huge advances in electronics and communications generally, Morse remains a widely used form of communication. It is employed around the world by many institutional and individual users. A specialist Morse code program is designed to facilitate computer-based learning of the system.
