Many methods have historically been used to protect metal from corrosion. Painting has been extremely common and with greasing being another method. A more novel process relies on a fusion bond covering. This technique leverages on the unique characteristics of certain chemicals which are fluid and pliable when first heated; once they cool and set, there is no way of reverting them to their previous condition.

The ingredients used to make the coating are supplied in the form of a fine powder. These consist of a hardener, resin, color and filler material. Binder is a term that refers to the first two materials combined, and they form the most basic elements of the mixture. The nature of the covering can be changed by varying the ratios and nature of these two.

Enzymes are used to accelerate certain processes in biological systems; hardeners play the same role. They shorten the curing time. There are many types of these chemicals. Changing the type and weights of these hardeners in a mix will lead to different results.

Apart from hardeners and resins, which form the basis of the mixture, other components may be added. These include coloring agents and other chemicals. They are used to change the nature of the final product; for instance, the pigments are used to achieve whatever colors are desired. These ingredients are supplied in the form of a powder. Less solid materials may be added at some point in the process.

All these ingredients are weighed carefully, and then mixed in a high speed centrifuge. The resulting blend is transferred to an extrusion machine, which is made out of a screw like structure spinning inside a fixed tube. This is then exposed to temperatures that can go as high as two hundred and fifty degrees Fahrenheit, or as low as a hundred and twenty. The spinning and the heat causes the mixture to compress and melt.

Because of the heat is not very high, and due to the extrusion machine working very quickly, the epoxy and curing agent do not react. This is then passed between rollers and becomes a solid sheet. This is taken to a machine that will turn it into small chips.

These are then ground into a fine powder, and transferred to containers which are then closed and stored in cool, dark stores, away from damp. The latter can be very destructive, and great pains are taken to ensure that stores stay very dry. This is what is used to cover metallic structures. Before this can be done, however, the surface to be coated needs to be prepared.

This is done by first clearing all grease and oil. This may be done by burning it off, or by using special cleaners. The next process involves blasting the target area with steel grit, garnet, coal slag, aluminum oxide or any other type of abrasive. The surface is then heated, and the fusion bond epoxy applied. Any irregular parts are coated using hand held spray guns.
