When you have a home, damaged pipes are common. However, most of the time, you're scared to repair the pipes because you don't know what to do. You might wind up calling for professional help which would cost you a lot. The truth is, doing the repair of pipes and pipe fittings can be done and is really easy. You just need to follow some of the steps on how to repair a damaged drainpipe.

The very first step is by getting rid of the broken section. Running water in your house is forbidden during this fix. To start, you have to wrap a sheet of paper round the pipe and you should cut squarely through the pipe using a keyhole saw. You'll need to repeat this process at the other end of the broken part. Stuff newspapers or paper towels into the pipes to block sewer gas if the pipe is directly connected to your sewer.

The second step is to chop the substitute pipe. Fitting a slip coupling over each standing pipe will do the trick. Measuring the space above and transferring the measurement to the new pipe needs to be done next. After this, cut the replacement section with a handsaw and miter box. You must also think about using a paper guide to make the square cut.

The 3rd step of the process is the application of the solvent cement. You have to bevel and deburr the pipe with a sharp knife so that you can aid water flow and improve the welding action of the solvent cement. You must also clean the ends of PVC and ABS pipes. You must also apply a thick coat of solvent cement to the pipe ends. A half-inch brush or applicator could make the job simpler.

The last step is to fit the replacement pipe. Working rapidly before the cement sets, raise the new pipe into position and slip one coupling over its joint, then the other. Each coupling must cover an equal amount of old and new pipe. Give each coupling a quarter-turn to spread the cement and wipe away excess cement using a clean cloth. Allow the joint to cure for no less than two hours then run water through the drain pipe.
