One of the toughest challenges facing any marketing agency is how to market effectively. Geoffrey James posted a blog about "5 Most Common Marketing Mistakes" in which he stated that "there's an incredible amount of really lousy marketing out there. I'm not just talking the "inept" kind of lousy, I'm talking the "would stink in a deep space vacuum" kind of lousy." It is difficult to navigate the many avenues of the competitive marketing universe without proper guidance. The following five tips will help establish a foundation for which to build, or re-build your company's marketing strategy.

Know Your Ideal Customer

First, marketers need to understand their product and its value. Secondly, marketers need to understand how to translate that value into meaning for their clients. Your product might be so great that you believe it will sell itself, but you have to convince others. Being able to articulate the need for your product and its benefit to your customer takes the myopic focus off of you, the marketer, and magnifies the positive impact on your client.

Listen to Your Customer

Yes, market research and analysis are important. But you learn a lot more from listening than talking. As a business to business marketer you must develop a concrete understanding of your client and their goals and visions for their companies. Learning the culture of each client's company allows you to implement a dynamic marketing strategy tailored specifically to the unique challenges facing that company.

Take Time to Understand What Your Client's Customer Wants

Most marketers find ways to market products to fill their client's needs. But, according to James, most marketers doing take the next step; satisfying the needs of their client's customers. Remember that your clients are in business to sell a product or service that meets the needs of their customers. As a marketer, your client's customers should also be your focus. If your services don't benefit your client's customer, they won't matter to your client.

Formulate a Value Proposition

Your value proposition must have meaning for both your client and your client's customer. Delivering on that promise requires detailed knowledge of how your client's business works from production to delivery and everything in between. Understand the business dynamics that pervade your client's entire supply chain.

Communicate a Value Proposition in a Clear, Succinct Way

Your value proposition doesn't have to be wordy. Keep it simple. James suggests that you write your value proposition in 25 words or less. Developing an effective marketing strategy requires time and effort. There are no short cuts but following these five steps will get you on the right path. And remember that sometimes the best way to move forward is to start at the beginning.
