Anyone with even half an entrepreneurial mind will eventually start wondering how to sell electricity in places where the utility is charging high rates for erratic power supply. The answer to this question is somewhat complicated because it more or less depends on the consumer's location and on state laws governing energy transactions. Not to mention the utility's policies about purchasing power from its own consumers.

State laws that enforce net metering are just about essential for this project to be financially viable. What these laws do is force the utility company to purchase renewable power from customers at the same rate which the company charges. Without this, the utility would only pay wholesale power purchase rates which would make the whole thing pointless.

In practical terms, the requirement is for a two-way net meter that can go back and forward. It runs like any other electricity meter when power is being consumed from the grid, but starts counting backwards when power is sent in to the grid by the consumer. This way, the consumer only has to pay the net amount after deducting the cost of the renewable energy sent back into the grid.

Sometimes, the net amount may show that the utility owes the customer money. Some utilities pay it off in cash while others will simply carry it forward on to the next billing cycle. There won't be any state laws governing this, so consumers should contact the utility to find out their policies about paying consumers in cash for power purchase.

A solar panel setup or wind turbine is going to be the best choice for both commercial and residential power production on a small scale. The choice between these two depends on the area in question. Rural settings with wide open spaces will benefit from a wind turbine while urban structures will find it more feasible to install a solar panel array on the roof.

The next step is determining whether to store the produced energy in batteries or link it up directly to the grid. Energy stored in batteries needs to be reconverted to AC using an inverter. On-grid systems produce two products that can be sold separately. One is the actual electricity sent to the grid and the other is an REC (renewable energy credit).

When 1000KW-hours of renewable power are produced, EPA regulations grants the producer one REC. These RECs can be sold to the utility along with the power or separately to other buyers. Companies buy RECs to balance the impact of their production/consumption of energy that is coming from a non-renewable source such as coal.

Huge amounts are being invested into innovative research and policy testing in this sector. Parked and plugged-in electric vehicles are being used as a source for distributed power storage that can be tapped by smart grids when required. Government schemes such as Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) are being tried out in many countries where the government pays people to use their own renewable energy instead of buying from a utility.

Under an FIT scheme, a home owner with a solar panel system would get paid per unit of power consumed at home and earn money separately from power sold to the utility. Additional savings are made possible by not using power from the grid. Given all this help provided by most governments and the huge demand for power, the real question is not about how to sell electricity. The hard part is being able to produce excess renewable energy.
