Why Bother With An SEO Company?

by Brent Peterson

Has someone told you that you need to start doing SEO for your website? Has a fast talking SEO guy promised you the moon and told you that search engine optimization is an investment that will pay you back with boatloads of customers? While it might sound tempting and almost too good to be true, you want to be sure that you're making the right decision. You could use the added business but is it work investing a good portion of your advertising budget in his services?

Most SEO companies might tell you that they can't guarantee anything an that search engines can be fickle at times. This is the truth. Search engine algorithms change multiple times a day and it can be nerve racking to watch your website bounce around from page to page. It can actually become a type of addiction as you watch your website climb in the rankings and then plummet to the depths of search engine hell only to arise again higher than it was before. You will feel great when your site is on top and want to fire your SEO guy when your site slips. But will all this stress be worth it in the end and can SEO help your business? That's the bottom line.

If you remove the emotion from that question, the answer is actually pretty easy to arrive at. It's all a matter of simple math so let's take a look at the numbers. A number one ranking for a keyword usually gets about 75 to 80 percent of the traffic. Out of those that click on your link and visit your website, you need to figure out the conversion rate. A typical conversion rate is about 25 percent. If you know how many people search for a particular keyword then you can calculate about how many customers you can expect from doing search engine optimization for a particular keyword. Multiply your conversions by the average value of a customer over their lifetime and you arrive at a dollar amount close to what you can expect to receive from your effort. If that amount is higher than the cost of hiring an SEO guy then you know you're making a good decision. If it's less, then you know that search engine optimization isn't worth the money spent.

It really is very simple math. You might get caught up in a sales speach about the benefits of SEO and how cool it would be to have your website on the first page of a search engine and how your competitors are paying big money in pay per click advertising but in the end it all comes down to simple math. Calculate how much you stand to make from SEO services and then subtract the cost of the services.

One way to look at SEO would be to consider it as a form of advertising. No different than any other form of advertising, there are variables that come into play. Are people looking for your service or product? How much do you stand to gain by bringing a customer to your website? What can you do to increase conversions? Could you offer special discounts or something for free to bring people in the door? SEO is just advertising using what people do naturally to get your name and your business in front of them.

The internet has replaced newspapers and telephone books as the place where people go to find service providers and businesses. People are searching for everything on the internet. They make their decisions based upon your website and they will go to the internet first when looking for everything from a divorce attorney to a dog walker. If you can get your name, telephone number and your website in from of them, you stand a very good chance of winning their business. That's what SEO is all about. It's all about being the first name they see when they search for what they're looking for.

So, once you've done the math and seen if SEO can benefit you then it's your job to find someone competent. Look for someone that is willing to put their name on the line and provide you some sort of assurance. Find someone that you like and who you can work with. You're the customer and you need to find someone who actually wants to help you and your business and not just make a paycheck.
