English Mastiff breeders in PA will enjoy sharing information with you about their dogs. After a period of being out of favor, there is now a lot of interest in this noble breed. Although the most massive of all dogs, it has a gentle disposition. The Irish Wolfhound and Great Dane are taller but not as big in the body.

The head is somewhat square and massive in size. They have dewlaps and flews. The deep, broad body is very muscular. The front legs are set well apart to cater for the wide chest. Weights of 150 to 250 pounds are average for males. Females are slightly lighter and weigh around 120 to 200 pounds. Occasionally a long haired dog is seen but the majority have short, close-fitting coats.

Colors are somewhat restricted although the typical fawn color can vary in its shades and intensity. Those with a hint of red through to a rich, deep red are termed 'apricot'. A straight fawn can range from silver to a golden yellow. Some have a lot of dark shading over the shoulders and back. All have a black mask. Although gentle and loyal, these dogs are too huge to be comfortable in city apartments and are best in suburban or country homes.

Pennsylvanian breeders will be keen to advance the reputation of their dogs and will have had breeding animals tested for those genetic diseases which may occur. Hip and elbow dysplasia are two of these. Thyroid problems and progressive retinal atrophy are others. As with many large dogs, English mastiffs can suffer from gastric torsion. Rather than being offered one large meal a day, they should be given two or three small meals daily. The lifespan varies from seven to ten or eleven years.

The size of these dogs is enough to deter most criminals and the dogs are rarely aggressive. They are more likely to bail an intruder up until their owner arrives. They will protect their family and the family's property without needing to be trained. In fact, they can be quite difficult to train. Obedience training and socialization should take place while they are young. They are good with children. Because of their size they are best kept leashed when taken out.

They are regarded as average shedders but are not high maintenance. An occasional brush will suffice. They should be bathed only when necessary as frequent bathing removes natural oils. This can lead to the development of skin conditions. The breed is not particularly active but should be given regular exercise. They will then stay much healthier and will be less likely to become obese. The dogs drool, wheeze and snore.

Today, instead of being used to bait bulls and bears, the mastiff is more likely to be used in search and rescue. Dog-fighting, too, has been replaced with watchdog and guarding duties. The breed is popular with military and police units.

Breeders recommend that puppies be restricted in activities which involve a lot of running until they are two years old or more. Soft bedding will help prevent arthritis and calluses. English Mastiff breeders in PA will be happy to give you more information about this majestic breed.
