Because anxiety is caused by so many different things, it is a complex issue people are facing in the modern world. It can also be difficult to avoid the causes of stress and anxiety nowadays, as many people are having financial problems and other issues that can make us anxious. However, none of this means that it's necessary to live with chronic anxiety, as there are many effective ways to treat this problem, some of which we'll be looking at in this article.

One way to get your anxiety symptoms under control is through medication, and there are a variety of choices that your doctor might suggest. The type of medication a doctor gives you will depend on your symptoms, how severe your anxiety is and whether it's accompanied by other problems such as depression. You shouldn't take medication, though, without being fully aware of the potential side effects, which are often a factor with anti-anxiety medications. Tranquilizers have the drawback of causing drowsiness; medications may also be associated with sexual difficulties, gaining weight and various other issues. You also don't want to become addicted to your medication, which is why it's best to think of it as a short term solution and not a permanent one.

One type of anxiety that can be very troubling is post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD, which results from having been exposed to violent or life threatening circumstances. Even if something traumatic happened years ago, it can remain an active memory that sets off anxiety or even panic attacks -survivors of disasters, bad accidents, wars, violent crimes and other highly stressful incidents often have this condition. Therapy can be effective at helping someone get over such an experience, though this may take a certain amount of time.

In some cases medication may also be prescribed to help the person control some of the troubling symptoms. An alternative treatment that's recently emerged is EMDR, which involves rapid eye movements that stimulate the brain in a way that removes the feeling of trauma.

While anxiety sometimes seems to occur out of nowhere, more often it's attached to another issue or condition, usually a problem in some area of your life. People suffering from anxiety sometimes bring new troubles upon themselves as well, as they might begin relying on alcohol, drugs, food or some other behavior to lessen their anxiety. Don't let other problems overshadow anxiety, though, as when you learn how to relax and reduce anxiety, you'll be in a far better position to work on any other areas of your life that need addressing. Yet if finances, relationships or other issues are causing you anxiety, you should also look for ways to make these areas of your life more stable, as this can also help reduce anxiety. In short, anxiety often has to be treated along with other problems, but it can often turn into a serious symptom of its own. You need to take fast action to treat the symptoms of anxiety whether its you that has it or someone you care a great deal about. Over time, the symptoms have a tendency to continue getting worse. Once treatment has ended you'll be able to get back to your normal daily life as schedules.
