In the novel "The Morabi," the main character Kalavit, who turns out to be the Morabi, was taught all about the gods when he was growing up. But as he comes to adulthood and takes over as chief of his island he comes to the conclusion that he has no faith in these gods at all. And as certain incidents occur and he finds himself adrift in his canoe, he understands that he is also adrift in his own doubt and confusion.

So many of us are like the Morabi. We were brought up believing in something but now as adults we don't know if we still believe or not. We feel like we drift in our confusion and doubt. The Bible says that we can have confidence in God but what if we don't believe the Bible?

There are reasons to believe in this most wonderful book. It is one of the oldest books in existence, and is still the most popular seller in bookstores. Also, there are thousands of copies and fragments of copies that date back 2000 years or more. These multiple copies and fragments attest to how long the Bible has been a significant influence on the world. Just to give you an example, there are about 650 copies of Homer's Iliad. That sounds like a lot of copies, and few doubt that the Iliad we read today is much different than the original. For just the New Testament of the Bible, there are 115 papyrus manuscripts; 257 uncial (written in capital letters) manuscripts; 2795 miniscule manuscripts; and 2200 lectionaries. That is over 5000 copies and fragments.

All of these copies show that the Bible continues to be accurate as well. If you played the game "telephone" when you were a kid you'll understand what I'm talking about here. A starting person whispers a phrase or word to another person. Then that person turns and whispers it to the next person. By the time you get to the last person in line the original phrase is completely changed to something else. It isn't that someone purposely changed it. It's just that this is the result when fallible humans pass on information. Mistakes occur. That's why people invented things like the backspace key and erasers. But if you put side by side a Hebrew or Greek translation of the Bible today with one of those fragments from two millennia ago you will be astounded by how accurate it is. And that same accuracy continues even though the book has been copied multiple times over many centuries.

The Bible also does not contradict itself as some claim. Yes, there are some texts that are difficult for us to understand. And yes, many doubters will start to bring up a laundry list of contradictions. The truth is that scholars have reduced the list of Bible difficulties to about two dozen. Some of these difficulties arise because of the multiple translations and copies. As we said before, people make mistakes. Some difficulties arise simply because we don't always know what the original writers meant. There were many difficulties and seeming contradictions in the King James Version of the Bible. But with the abundant ancient texts available to us today most of those have been corrected.

The Bible is a multifaceted book and there are still areas that people find difficult. But there is no place where any major doctrine contradicts any other major doctrine. Even though the Bible was written by 40 different people over a period of about 1500 years, it is striking just how united it is. And as people make new discoveries, I staunchly believe that the remaining difficulties will be solved also. You can think about it like this. In the almost two thousand years since the last book of the Bible was penned, there hasn't been a single discovery that has come along and discredited the Bible. That is an amazing record.

The Bible is clearly a book that can be trusted. And it stands unique among other writings simply because of the contents. Many doubt the Bible until they actually pick it up and read it. Josh MacDowell, C.S. Lewis of Narnia fame, and others were atheists until they actually read it. Then they changed their minds and became committed Christians. Just Google "atheists who converted to Christianity" and read their stories. You can read "The Morabi" to see how it turns out for Kalavit. But I would love to hear how it turns out for you as well.
