The apparatus that is mounted on sailing vessels to trap wind for propelling it forward is called rigging. The apparatus includes masts, sails, cordage and yards. Rigs are commonly attached to the hull of the vessel to make sure the whole vessel moves.

Different aerodynamic properties are set for use with different sail plans. Vessels are classified according to sail plan, the hull design and the type of rig. The rig is divided into different parts. One of these parts is the cordage. These are the ropes that control the sail. Clips and pulleys are used to attach sails and spars to the cordage. Weight and strength of rope determines the cordage material.

The cordage is fixed in one position in a standard rig configuration. A standard rig is made of steel and it is placed in between the mast and the deck. Cordage in a running rig controls the position and shape of sails since this type of rig must be flexible to allow spars and sails to move.

The sail is also part of the rig. It is made of fabric such as Kevlar and designed to trap wind in a way that controls air current around the sailing vessel. Metal clips and rope hoops are used to attach spars and rigs to the sails. The sail plan is determined by the design of the sails.

The last part of the rig is the spars. Spars are made of aluminum and carbon fiber. They are hollow and solid beams that support and control the sails. Spars are made up of yards, masts, booms, gaffs and battens. Sails are attached to the spars by hanks, bolt-ropes and sliding systems which are made to allow a range of motion that does not affect aerodynamic properties of the boat.
There are many businesses that deal with rigging. In case you have a new boat and you cannot understand the manual seek help. Professionals will offer you guides as well as advice on the different sail plans and configurations.
