For entrepreneurs, opening a restaurant is one of the hardest things to do. Though restaurants do fail more than the usual self-starter businesses, the rate isn't as bad as people say it is. For that matter, even franchised restaurants (usually the smaller "fast food" variety) have a failure rate just a few percentage points below self starters.

So what, you may ask, can entrepreneurs do to increase their chances for success?

We have 3 tips that from successful restaurant owners. The first of these is location. There are some restaurants in remote areas that do succeed, but more of them fail because of the bad location. The best thing to do is make sure that there is a lot of traffic in the area where you want to open a restaurant. Established areas are best, but consequently, most expensive. Don't go with a lease that is too high, but at the same time, you shouldn't choose a location just because it is cheap. Try to find some middle ground.

The next tip is to concentrate on solely on the things that will make people want to come in, and more importantly, want to come back. This may sound too simple, but it actually involves more than just good food and ambiance. You must have great food, great atmosphere, and the best customer service everyday. Whether you run a sandwich shop or a high end bistro, getting these three elements together and doing so consistently is paramount to success.

The third tip is to find and build good business relationships with your suppliers. It's important that you have a supply chain that you can count. You must find food distributors and a restaurant supply distributor that you can count on. Your food distributors should be able to deliver on time and are committed to bringing you quality products. A good restaurant supply company will enable you to run the business and deal with the subparts equipment.

Of course, there is a lot more to the restaurant business than these basics, but in the end, the basics are what separate successful restaurants from failed restaurants.
