<div class='uawarticle'>The genre of fiction which is generally referred to as 'steampunk' became formally recognised as a genre in the last 15 years or so of the 20th century. Anyone who has not come across the term before may well wonder what factors define steam punk books. Newcomers should expect a rich and imaginative mix of science fiction, horror, fantasy and historical fiction. The genre has also inspired a style of clothing and a whole culture centred on its themes and ideas.<br />
<br />
While the genre coalesced in the late 20th century, much of what happens in steam punk fiction takes place in what could be termed as 'the past'. This is usually a Victorian or Wild West era world, often defined by alternative, imagined narratives of history. As in speculative fiction, there is often a use of certain elements of what really happened in history, with the fantastic or bizarre, often with real historical figures appearing in surreal and unexpected settings.<br />

The term steam punk is really derived from this focus on imagined pasts. The possibilities of alternative technologies, often steam powered, are explored in many stories which are typical of the genre. Many of these fictional technologies are powered by steam, or energies that would have been available during the 19th century.<br />
<br />
This means that readers of this type of fiction will often come across computers, airships or other anachronistic devices during the course of their reading. This produces a often intriguing background for plots, where characters can travel or explore the world in ways which would have been unimaginable for their real life counterparts. This produces often brilliant works which combine science-fiction, history and fantasy in superbly imaginative ways.<br />

The term 'steampunk' may well have been coined by someone who was familiar with the 'cyberpunk' genre in the 1980s, but its roots go back much further than that. Earlier writers such as H G Wells can be credited with sparking much of what was later termed steampunk. Artists like Remedios Varo contributed to the visual imaginings of the genre which have been spawned.<br />

Later writers like Englishman Mervyn Peake, with his 'Titus' books, also helped to shape the forms the genre has eventually taken. Many best-selling writers from the last decade or so have also clearly been inspired by elements of steampunk. American Scott Westerfield and British author Phillip Pullman are just two who have arguably taken the genre into the mainstream.<br />

The genre has also been inspired by the works of certain film makers. The 1985 film 'Brazil' by director Terry Gilliam provided much of what has become seen as standard visual style in the genre. The movie's combination of a dystopian vision of a future society with advanced technology in a timeless era which recalled the Victorian era really took the ideas behind the genre to a wider audience.<br />

A newcomer to <A href="http://www.cjamesleone.com">steam punk books</A> should expect to be pleasantly surprised by works of imagination which offer an intriguing combination of science fiction, fantasy an history. Real historical figures as diverse as Oscar Wilde and the Duke of Wellington can appear, often playing out alternative historical narratives, using technologies which are anachronistic. Some works may also incorporate elements of the supernatural or mythology.<br />
