Type J thermocouple is made from two materials, usually are used metal alloys. This one is made from constantan and iron. It is used to measure the temperature. The commercial ones are inexpensive and they can measure a large range of temperatures. This model, unlike some others has a more restricted scale but it is more sensitive.

This model, like most of the other ones, is actually composed of two legs, with different properties. The first leg is positive. It also is made from iron so it has magnetic properties. His color is white. The second leg is negative. It does not have the magnetic property. His color is red. The second leg is made from constantan.

This model can support high temperatures. It can be used from 0 to 816Celsius degrees. Turning into Fahrenheit degrees, it means from 32 to 1500 Fahrenheit degrees. They are popular because they have a superior voltage range, and that can actually lead to the production of higher temperatures. They also have a relatively wide range for measurements, which make these models more convenient.

This model, is highly prone to accumulating rust through oxidation thanks to the iron that is part and parcel of it. But, it has some disadvantages. They cannot be used above 750 Celsius degrees, because an abrupt magnetic transformation will occur, causing a permanent calibration. The main application is made with old equipment.

If its protected by a compacted mineral insulation, the instrument can be used from 0 to 816 Celsius degrees. The temperature range is 538 Celsius degrees. Even if it usually is usable until 816 Celsius degrees, it still is not recommended to use it above 750 Celsius degrees, because an abrupt magnetic transformation will cause permanent calibration. It also is highly recommended to use these instruments in inert, oxidizing, vacuum and reducing atmospheres up to 750 Celsius degrees.

They are very used in gas chromatographs, mass spectrometers. The instruments are used for laboratory and industrial equipment. A faster response time requires a smaller diameter of the wires. All the models are supplied with 12 inch leads. Two stiles exist: bare wire and ceramic insulated. As mentioned before, a model has two legs, one from iron and the second one from constantan. The first one is magnetic and it can easily be identified from its distinct the white color. The second one is non- magnetic and it has the red color.

It has resistance at higher temperatures due to the protection of a compacted mineral insulation and because it has an appropriate outer sheath. Because the leg which is made from iron is rapidly oxidizing, it often is recommended to use larger gauge wires to compensate. Otherwise, above 540 Celsius degrees, the iron will oxidize. Its also recommended to use a protecting tube for a longer life and cleanliness.
Type J thermocouple have a lot of advantages, but it also have and a lot of disadvantages. It is not expensive, because of the alloy which is made from. It can help you to measure until a pretty high temperature. They are not usually very resistant especially at very low temperatures, so it is better to be careful when you choose the place where you want to keep the models.
