Appearances are deceptive as they say. In a corresponding way all those people who seem to be impoverished are not always so (modestly as poor as to demand your attention). You should have the skill to choose orphans. Every child that is in rags in rural Africa may not essentially require your help.

The common error that people tend to make is to go and arbitrarily assemble children to help them. They mistakenly feel that because kids don't have shoes to wear and look poor are really poor. It is easy to make such a mistake even if the intentions are good or the heart is filled with kindness. Most of the people in African villages look deprived but it is not necessary that they need any sponsors from the West.

Many Africans have their farms to grow their food and have enough to eat, sufficient funds to educate their children, etc. Their routine life involves husbandry and hard work on the fields. But so do the cowboys in the West and the local farmers that work in the fields. Even if they are covered with mud or look pitiable does not mean they need any sort of help.

You should be able to get in touch with local people who can assist you to deal with such issues and learn how to select the really affected ones. Although you need to be aware of people who can be dishonest and present their relatives to get sponsors for them. It can be an easy way out for such fraudulent people to get money from the sponsors to pay school fees for their kids. So they try to fake their identities and hide the truth from an inexperienced person who falls prey to such tactics.

There must be thousands who require help, but providing the right help, to the right people at the right time is the key. If you volunteer to go on a mission trip to Africa or in an orphanage you will have a first-hand experience. Getting the right training you need to begin the process for an orphanage, shortlisting the deserving orphans, finding sponsors and acquiring funds to construct an orphanage are a few areas that can be learned well at a good training school for missionaries. This could give you an approximate suggestion of how you can start your own orphanage.
