Happiness is unquestionably not a straightforward thing to measure. Many individuals believe that happiness means money, good health, career security, and a stable family. Nonetheless a report made by Columbia University's Earth Institute authorized by the United Nations Meeting on Happiness shows that it's more involved.

According to the report, various aspects such as political freedom, robust social networks, and the lack of corruption play different roles among the top and bottom countries. The primary purpose of the report's editors, John Helliwell, Richard Layard, and Jeffrey Sachs, was to "review the state of contentment in the world today and show the way in which the new science of contentment explains personal and countrywide diversifications in happiness."

The top spot on the World Happiness Report was taken by Denmark, followed by Finland, Norway, and Holland. Canada finished at a very decent 5th place, as the most happy non-European country. The ranking was primarily based on a measurement called the "life analysis score," which assesses factors such as people's health, family, employment continuity, political freedom, and executive corruption on a zero-to-ten scale. The average score of these top 4 was 7.6, while the least cheerful nations, including Togo, Benin, the Central African Republic, and Sierra Leone, had a typical life analysis score of 3.4.

The measurement takes under consideration the result of previous reports on happiness from the Gallup World Poll, the World Values Survey, the European Values Survey and the EU Social Survey. Many of these previous reports have connected personal satisfaction with earnings; nonetheless that parallel has been questioned in recent years by economic experts who've advised the happiness of a nation is decided by much more than its gross national product.

For instance, the world's economic superpower, the U. S. , has achieved serious commercial and technological progress in the past half century, but U.S. Citizens do not feel more happy than they did 50 years ago. On the other hand, uncertainties and stresses have grown, social and economic inequalities have significantly increased, social trust has declined, and confidence in the government has fallen into an all-time low.
