Security is a crucial aspect that businesses should concern themselves with. While security is an essential need, it has become especially so these days considering the increasing risk to our security in today's environment. There are several forms of security to consider to help prevent these threats. For example, if we are talking about securing a building, security turnstiles should be one of the first things you will consider. These are physical barriers installed at entry points where access control is necessary.

It forms part of the first line of defense against anything or anyone who presents a threat against the security of those who occupy the building and their assets. But other than restricting access, turnstiles also have the following functions: count the number of people who come in and out of an area; monitor checkpoints; and prohibit tailgating. An important aspect in the technology used in turnstile is the need to use credentials to be allowed entrance. This credential can be in the form of a coin, payment or electronic card.

There are different types of turnstiles: waist-high, full-height and optical. The waist-high turnstiles are commonly used. They allow entry only after a ticket or coin has been inserted. However as the term implies, it is only waist-high, and as such, people can easily jump over it. Another type is the full-height turnstile, which is about 7 feet or higher and is designed similar to a revolving door. This eliminates the possibility of anyone jumping over it, thus, is more secure. It comes as either High Entrance/Exit Turnstile or as Exit Only. The last type is the optical turnstile. It employs infrared beams to detect passage, especially the entry of anyone who doesn't have a valid pass. This is ideal for establishments where visible barriers aren't considered aesthetically pleasing.

Given the design, technology and uses of turnstiles, they can be installed in various settings. They can be used in stadiums, recreational parks, museums, subways and other mass transit stations, company lobbies, retail stores casinos, cafeterias, exhibit halls and similar establishments. Protection of a building requires the establishment of entry security.

If effective control is exercised at the entrance itself, protection of the occupants and assets inside an establishment becomes a lot easier. If you were to explore the market of security devices, you would be stunned at the many innovations in the market. This means you have no reason not to have a security system installed. The range of options is wide and you need to be familiar with them if your goal is to get the best security you can afford. As always, knowledge is your best tool.
