Just think about Team Building Events. It has been argued by some politicians, that in co-operative companies and similar enterprises (such as the John Lewis Partnership), where employees have a material stake in the success of the business, they tend to care more about their work, and crucially perform better as individuals. This, the politicians concluded, meant performing better as a team, and accordingly leading to greater success.

Now to some extent they were right - every team member's performance contributes to the whole, and people are generally more motivated and therefore perform better when they have a vested interest in success.

But they were also wrong... very wrong, in thinking that this automatically translates to a better performance as a team.

Certainly it seems that great team work requires that every team member must be motivated and giving their best, but it also needs to be in a co-ordinated manner; each team member working on a different aspect of a common goal. It is only then when teams become much more productive and efficient than working as individuals; the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts.

There are two key aspects to improved teamwork and performance:

* Motivation and performance on an individual level

* Co-ordinating these efforts to perform better as a team

One activity that develops both of these characteristics at the same time is Bushcraft.

Bushcraft Team Building events see teams face unavoidable challenges - the outcomes of which, directly affect their material comfort; the food they have to eat, how warm they are, where they will sleep and so on. The link from this understandably motivates even the most reluctant of team members to succeed and to overcome these challenges, but they will only succeed if they work well as a team!

With only a short period before nightfall, teams will not complete all the necessary tasks (collecting firewood, building a shelter and so on) if they work as individuals, and it is for this reason that this activity helps communicate the power of working together to even the most intransigent of groups.

In short Bushcraft is the ultimate Team Building activity, motivating, communicating and bonding all at the same time and what's more: IT'S GREAT FUN TOO!
