Keep your direct mail campaigns small and targeted. It would not make sense to dispatch a letter concerning your new lawn gnome product line to individuals who reside in apartments. Similarly, it is unlikely that you will find much success marketing life insurance to college students or other people that are at a stage of life where they are unlikely to buy it. Read the addresses and see who this mail is going to; is it an apartment, a dorm, or some kind of multi-family unit? Where in the city are they, and how far are they from metropolitan areas? As you assemble your direct mail marketing campaign, you have to keep all of these things in mind.<br />

The beginning of the direct mail letter should contain the most important information. The recipient is then sure to see what you want them to read, even if the letter is really long. You will be amazed at the people who will hire you or buy from you without reading an entire piece of direct mail. Keep the direct mailing plain and to the point. No need to add fancy graphics or inserts. Keep it to one page. Long and elaborate items will not keep your customer's attention. A simple postcard or one page letter will work much better. You should make a minimal interruption in the customer's day. Many marketers follow the "single page" rule, which says that if it takes you longer than a page to get your message across, your message is too complicated. Postage will cost more for longer letters. You'll end up paying more money to the post office.<br />

You shouldn't be intimidated by direct mail at all. It probably will seem a bit overwhelming if you are the type of person who conducts most of their business online. However, if you want to reach the largest target audience possible with your marketing efforts, your will need to be willing to go after the targets that do not operate online. Letting people know who you are and the products and services you are offering can be effectively achieved through direct mail. This is because not everyone is well versed in the internet. There are many other people who only stay online for a few minutes at a time. Direct mail could be one of your more surprising marketing campaigns by bringing you sales you never imagined!<br />
