Think You Don't Have Time To DeClutter Your Closet? Think Again.

Oh no... Your closet is a MESS and you have absolutely no idea what to do about it. The whole process seems like an insurmountable task. But it doesn't have to be...

Our minds are exaggerating. DeCluttering your closet doesn't have to be as intimidating a task as you're making it out to be.

1. Free up some time and get boxes. Depending on the size of your closet this may take an hour or maybe even a few. The amount of boxes you get depends on the size of your closet as well. You may need up to six. Plan accordingly.

2. Take everything out of the closet. Lump it all on the floor in one big pile. If you're anything like me, you're probably naturally trying to mentally categorize things in your mind as you put them in this one big pile. Don't do this! It's what leads to your DeClutter paralysis in the first place! Now, if you have an exceptionally large closet (I do!) you may want to do it in sections, one at a time. For most of you reading this however, you'll only need one big pile.

3. Keep. Toss. Maybe. Those will be the THREE categories you'll be grouping your one massive pile of stuff into. Again, put very little thought into this process. You shouldn't be dwelling on any of the items. Just pick it up for a maximum of 10 seconds and make a decision. Make sure you keep the "maybe" pile small. You'll be putting the "maybe" pile somewhere out of sight for 6 months.

4. Once you have your one big pile sorted into A) Keep B) Toss and C) Maybe, it's time to bust out your cleaning utilities and make sure the inside of the closet is clean as a whistle. After you're finished doing that, it's time to put the "keep" pile back in the closet, nice and neatly. Leave space in between items and generally make sure it's all organized to the best of your abilities.

5. Really important step: Label and DATE (today's date) the "maybe" box. Store the box away some place out of sight out of mind... And make sure there's not a lot of "maybe" stuff in the box. Be decisive! It might help to make a note of this box in whatever calendar you're using (paper, phone, computer) for 6 months from today. Lets face it... You'll forget all about it. I would. Now for the "toss" box. You need to be swift when it comes to getting rid of this. Otherwise it's not going to happen. Donate it and sell any expensive stuff on Craig's List or eBay. Whatever you're most comfortable with. Don't procrastinate on this. Get er' done!

6. Sit back and relax. Have a glass of wine or an ice cold beer. Reward yourself. Always reward yourself after you've completed a task you're none too fond of. That's my motto anyway.
