<div class='uawarticle'>One of the hottest dramatic subjects in recent years is that of psychic detectives. Television shows such as NBC's Medium and the USA Network's Psych center around characters with paranormal abilities, real or feigned, which assist the police in solving crimes. The phenomenon of psychic detectives has even garnered the attention of shows such as Larry King Live, despite the fact that research seems to indicate that alleged paranormal assistance has yet to contribute to the resolution of a single case.<br />

One of the main difficulties in understanding the varieties of psychic phenomena lies in the confusion over the differing types of paranormal abilities. This confusion has led many researchers to approach the phenomena with a bias slanted toward skepticism, rather than the open-minded quest for truth that should characterize any studies of the paranormal. As with most unexplained phenomena, there is an inherent danger in dismissing without question those things which we do not understand. This is why so many people around the world today don't believe in psychic powers.<br />

Any attempt at understanding the types of psychic phenomena invariably begins with extrasensory perception, or ESP. ESP is a general classification that encompasses all phenomena involving the obtaining of information by means outside of the senses. As such, it includes telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition. These are the more readily identifiable paranormal abilities, often portrayed in book s and movies. However there are more than just these three. Telepathy is the ability to engage in direct mental communication with another individual, and has been popularized in such movies as the X-Men. The ability ranges from mere mind-to-mind talking to Clairvoyance is also known as remote viewing, and is the ability to obtain information over long distances from unseen sources. Precognition is also known as premonition, and entails the acquisition of information about the future - most often via visions or dreams.<br />

That, of course does not stop the claims of those who profess to be psychic detectives. Some psychics may build their reputations upon the few times that they "guessed" correctly, but the inordinate number of false predictions are either ignored or forgotten by a media too addicted to sensationalism to maintain normal journalistic standards. Despite dozens of psychic attempts at "solving" crimes - particularly high-profile missing persons cases - nearly every tip that these detectives provide to the police and families of the missing invariably amount to nothing but wasted time and dashed hopes. It gives the family a false since of hope most of the time and makes the situation worst.<br />

Nevertheless, for many people in Brazil and the Philippines - as well as desperate individuals around the world - the belief in this practice remains strong and is practiced by many. And while there are certainly practitioners of the craft who knowingly manipulate and deceive their patients as part of a confidence game for profit that is by no means definitive proof that the practice is in its entirety fraudulent. As with most psychic phenomena, even the most ardent and devoted critics are unable to completely disprove this surgical technique. Sometimes people confuse psychic surgery for faith healing; however these are two entirely different acts. Faith healing uses spiritual means like prayer, spiritual insights and other means to improve one's health. However it is also outlawed in the United States just like psychic surgery. Many faith healers believe they can summon supernatural interventions and heal the ill by this practice. However just like psychic surgery it isn't true in the public's eyes or governments eye's and is outlawed many places around the world.<br />
