You will have difficulty finding a business establishment today that doesn't play music in their overhead speakers. Playing music in a business establishment has several known advantages. First among these advantages is music creates brand perception. You can do a lot to influence how your clients perceive your business with the help of music.

Studies done in 1997 on sports retail stores indicate that music played inside a store affects how customers describe the establishment. Customers that say they don't listen to the upbeat music from the overhead speakers say that the stores they visited are "lively" and "cool". Similar studies were done in the same establishments, only the second time, slow songs were used, with customers saying the store was lifeless, dull, boring and made them feel tired.

A study done in 1998 provided evidence that the music played in establishments greatly influence the customer's perception of the establishment, or at least, parts of it where music is played. A study done in a restaurant back in 1998 showed customers describing the bar where lively music is played to be "invigorating" and "enjoyable" while not so nice feedback were received in the dining area where there isn't any ambient music. This is also a pretty good indicator about how music affect the behavior of people inside an establishments.

Certain experiments done in grocery stores and supermarkets show that when lively retail music is played, customers tend to shop faster and are in a better mood, minimizing delay and long lines in the checkout counters. There had been an experiment in 1997 where a store alternately played French and German songs everyday for a week; the result: French wines sold more during days French songs were played and German wines outsold every wine product on days German songs blared through the store speakers.

But perhaps the biggest advantage of playing music inside a store is that customers are naturally drawn to areas where they hear nice music playing. More so, music makes people want to linger in the establishment. Slow music influences customers to move slower, while fast music makes them move faster. Have you ever wondered why restaurant music is never fast, always mellow, relaxed and soft?

The longer the customers sit in the dining area, the more wine they drink, the more food they eat and this means they spend more money. It is important, however, to consider your establishment and your patrons when you choose ambient music.
