One thing about using testimonials is they are not any kind of magic bullet, but rather one important piece in what is hopefully a well-oiled sales machine. As we have stated elsewhere, it is much better to have them than not; however, one caveat is that poor testimonials or those that arouse suspicion can work against you. But no doubt, this is an extra area of attention that you cannot ignore. Remember there are no magic bullets, but you can use the following to turn this situation around if you stick to it.

Feedback is valuable for any business, and so that is the basic approach you will want to take with your customers. Don't hesitate when it comes to asking for feedback because most of the time it's like - "you don't ask, you don't get". The best way to ask for a testimonial is to note down any positive feedback that you see from your customers and later on ask their permission about using it as a testimonial on your website. Most of the time customers will be more than happy to give their consent, just make sure you get it clear as to if you can publish their name or even website along with the testimonial to make it more effective. We will say again, because it is really important, that every testimonial you publish must have proof of permission from the customer.

Always keep things positive on your sites, and we are primarily speaking about the competition and talking trash, etc. There is a difference when a legal line has been crossed as it pertains to the words of others, but otherwise try to learn from any thoughts or feelings written about your business by others. Ultimately, you cannot really control what anyone will say in a testimonial unless you ask them to write something, but that is really not in the spirit of an honest testimonial.

Just as long as the testimonials are honest, then it is acceptable to offer a testimonial to those customers who have a business - they may want to do the same for you. As you know, there really are no promises that if you write one the other person will do the same for you, but you just never know what may happen. Linking back to your site from your own personal testimonials to any other business is very important. If you do this enough times, then you will see that a good percentage of people will be willing to return the gesture.

You will discover that once you have a good collection of terrific testimonials, your conversions will improve.
