<div class='uawarticle'>Thermocouples are sensors for determining temperature. They are made of two conductors joined together. When heated or cooled around the junction, a voltage proportional to the magnitude of heating is produced. They are categorized depending on the conductors making them. Type j thermocouple, also referred to as iron-constantan, is a good example of such a category.<br />

The sensor is made of iron and constantan, and is also commonly known by the name iron-constantan. The iron has a positive charge while constantan carries a negative charge. Constantan is an alloy of 45 percent nickel and 55 percent copper. The iron predisposes the junction to oxidation especially when used in temperature below zero. This junction has a remarkable high temperature output and can be used within a big range of temperatures, thus, is very popular.<br />

Iron-constantan can be used in temperatures ranging from -40 Celsius degrees to 750 Celsius degrees. This is a wider range than all the other junctions apart from k junction. It cannot be used in temperatures above 760 since they cause abrupt magnetic transformation leading to permanent decalibration.<br />
<br />
The device mostly occurs as a thin wire with remarkably high sensitivity of approximately 55 microvolts per Celsius. Reducing the diameter of the wire enhances sensitivity but reduces the range of temperatures it can cover. It is mostly used with old model equipment which cannot use most of the modern sensors. It is also the standard sensor used in gas chromatographs and mass spectrometers.<br />

This junction can either be ceramic insulated or bare. The bare ones may be insulated with any ordinary insulator while the ceramic insulated are housed in a ceramic tube. The ceramic insulation prevents shorting and reduces susceptibility to aging.<br />
<br />
The temperatures covered can be increased by proper insulation. If <A href="http://www.stimfg.com/product/">type j thermocouple</A> is coated properly with ceramic, it may be used for temperatures as high as 830 Celsius degrees. This model of sensor is the second most used junction.<br />
