Companies and Organisations the world over are embracing teams as an effective method of working. Most working environments now champion the team as well as the individual and even 'supervisors' have been renamed 'team leaders'. But why is it that teams are so important?

Teams are universal. The concept can be translated to so many different situations, environments, business models - it doesn't matter where, how or what: a team is a team. People that share common goals and objectives, are brought together with a sense of community, where strengths are multiplied and utilised effectively. It is here that independence runs alongside a recognition of interdependence.

Interdependence is significant when thinking about responsibility. 'A problem shared is a problem halved' or so the saying goes, imagine if you were a team of five or ten or even twenty - the problems seems less, the responsibilities are shared. If there is a way for people to come together and stand by each other during the difficult periods, then there will be a much greater push in strength and a much greater output during the good times. I am sure many would argue in favour of the contradictory where 'too many cooks spoil the broth', but that's only if each individual has their own agenda for the finished product - common goals are essential.

Individually we are one drop, together we are an ocean.

-Ryunosuke Satoro

Teams also, in essence, capitalise on the power of collaboration between individuals. This is done through bringing together a mix of talents, strengths, skills and allowing them to be leveraged as resources for the benefit of themselves as individuals and a collective (as well as the company and organisation as a whole). This is then filtered down into a high sense of motivation and largely a vast improvement in morale. By bringing people together in such a collaborative sense, team members will feel valued when their individual contributions make a difference.

But it isn't just about what people can give to the team; it's what they can take too. Teamwork offers an outlet for learning from each other and can help enhance perceptions and views on a variety of topics. As well as this, people are able to learn and develop new skills from each other. As well as sharing responsibilities it is about sharing talents to improve and benefit the collective.

Essentially, it appears evident that teams are indeed important. There is a basic need within all of us to belong. Within a team, everyone has an opportunity to contribute to the bigger picture - a mosaic if you like; where each piece is as important and effective as the combined image itself.
Keeping together is progress.
