Guide On Finding Work As A Medical Coder

Medical coders provide a key step in the medical billing process. The medical coding professional will review a patient's medical record to verify procedures that have been performed on the patient, and the doctor's diagnosis on the patient's condition. The coding specialist then selects the right codes for medical conditions and procedures to make the right claims to the insurance provider. The code books used today are the CPT and HCPCS which contain codes for various treatment, surgical, and diagnostic procedures, and ICD-9-CM which is a compendium of codes for medical conditions. These codes combine numbers and letters and they allow healthcare facilities and insurers an easy, uniform, and correct way of communicating procedures and diagnosis.

To be successful in this job, one needs to have a good grasp of insurance, laws on health information, anatomy, and medical terminologies. They also need to be familiar on how to use the code books and computer-or-paper based data management. Hence, post-secondary education and training is usually needed to gain entry into this profession. While a lot of medical coding specialists have strengthened their careers by completing a bachelor's or master's degree, these are not necessary to take entry level jobs.

What you need to get though is to get a short course of study and to pass a CPC exam medical coding certification. Courses can be offered in a classroom setting or online and would cost anywhere around a thousand to two thousand dollars. There are a number of organizations that offer medical coding certification classes and accrediting exams. The American Health Information Management Association and the American Academy of Professional Coders provide classes and accrediting exams.

The job description of medical coding professionals extend beyond ascribing codes to procedures and diagnosis. They are also usually doing auditing work as well as claim resubmissions. They can also teach doctors and companies on the coding industry's practices.

Medical coders with certifications will remain to be in demand despite the growing sophistication of billing and coding applications since these still need a human-driven input and verification. Medical coders spend most of their time in front of the computer, managing paperwork and they usually earn about $30,000 per year on average if they are a full-time employee, which is almost the same for more labor-intensive jobs in the healthcare industry like that of nursing aides and orderlies.
