Numerous individuals have wondered about exactly what is self esteem. The term essentially refers to a person's overall evaluation or appraisal of his or her value as a person. It is not, however, the technical information concerning oneself that he or she uses for the basis of this evaluation. Rather, this opinion is based on the person's own beliefs about what he or she is worth.

There are various ways to determine whether or not a person has an adequate level of this trait. Many experts recommend that one ask himself or herself specific questions in order to determine if a healthy level of self esteem is present. Individuals may be told to ask themselves if they feel that they are good human beings, and whether or not they like themselves.

Experts may also recommend that individuals ask themselves if they think they deserve love and happiness. They may be instructed to examine their inner emotions to determine if they feel they are good human beings. Those who have little regard for themselves often find that it is difficult to answer yes to the aforementioned questions.

There are various reasons that individuals may develop negative opinions about themselves. However, there are ways through which low self esteem can be corrected. Most psychologists agree that regardless of why a person suffers from a lack of confidence, there are effective ways of dealing with this issue.

Negative thought patterns are typically at the root of a poor self opinion. Such belief systems must be eliminated or a person's confidence level will never increase. To eliminate a negative opinion of oneself, the human mind must be reprogrammed. To accomplish this, positive thoughts must replace those of a negative nature.

As one would suspect, both time and effort are required on the part of the person who wishes to raise his or her confidence level. A reputable therapist will be able to guide the individual through mind exercises that will reprogram his or her thoughts in a positive way. One can also find such programs online.

Naturally, there is a certain level of dedication required from the person who wishes to dismantle destructive thinking. However, when positive results are experienced, almost everyone will feel it was well worth the time and effort. Those wondering what is self esteem must have a clear answer to this question in order to begin having a better opinion of themselves. Once the term is understood clearly, individuals can begin working towards bolstering their confidence, and in doing so enhance the quality of their life.
