What is self confidence? It is the opinion and value a person holds of themselves. It often shows in the manner they carry themselves, their actions and the way they talk. It is the level of confidence someone displays when it comes to their judgment, power, decision making, etc.

A person's attitude in their life plays a great role in their level of happiness, performance and health in life. Personality starts developing during childhood when an individual is still growing and surrounded by certain people who shape their lives. It can be influenced largely by how guardians and people around treat you.

A child depends on the reactions from other people in other to feel safe, funny, attractive, secure and intelligent. Personal esteem is influenced a great deal by how much someone feels they are accepted by people whom they consider important in their lives. This is because a lot of people depend on the attitude others have towards them, for their level of confidence.

A person's confidence is raised when they believe others think highly of them. Personal acceptance is a base point on which esteem is built. There are ways in which a person can develop confidence.

Self Disclosure - This has to do with letting go of things that may have happened in the past by telling at least one person about it. It deals with letting go of unhappy memories by disclosing them to someone who will not judge or make you feel guilty about them. This is the base of psychotherapy, psychiatry and psychology.

Awareness - This is another step in personality development. When someone shares what they think and feel with another person, then they become aware of the emotions. When a person shares in words with someone who can listen and not criticize them that is when they can understand themselves.

This is the base of personal awareness, with this they begin to realize that they are not bad after all. It creates an honest and objective opinion of who they are. This in turn leads to personal awareness.

Self Acceptance: When you are aware of whom you are, then you can understand and accept it. You take your highs and lows, weaknesses and strengths and accept them like that. This aids an understanding that no particular person is perfect.

So back to the question what is self confidence? It can be called a general evaluation of personal worth whether positive or negative. It is a first step towards development, progress, achievements and success.
