Three SEO Stories That Aren't True

by Juan McLaughlin

Many internet marketers don't really know how search engines operate, so many myths about this are often repeated. These myths can be hard to combat because once mistaken ideas are repeated often enough, they are widely believed in. In this article we will be discussing such myths that you should avoid at all costs.

While there are many things that can help you get a higher search ranking, using a header tag is not one of them. While some still believe that keywords in the H tag can increase their rank, this is not true. But if you really want to see the answer for yourself, you can run tests. So the use of your header tags should be restricted, and you need to only use them when they got with your page's design or the CMS (content management system). If it doesn't fit the site design, skip the use of these tags.

Another SEO myth is that you should optimize only one keyword with one page. This idea that every page should only be optimized for one key phrase is something that many internet marketers believe, but it is simply not true. Those who cling to this idea say that it makes their pages more focused, which supposedly makes them rank better. However, if you write a page that is focused on only one keyword or phrase, you'll find that it's very hard to do without it becoming forced and artificial. In addition, having a page devoted to only one keyword when you could have used several is simply a poor use of space on your site. There is no good reason to devote a whole page to just one keyword when you could be using several related keywords as well. You will get better results if you target as many keyword phrases as you can on a page. You'll get more targeted traffic this way. You can find out for yourself by looking at your web analytics that you are getting traffic from several, possibly many different keywords. It's completely okay to optimize for more than one phrase and is critical for your search engine success.

Another myth is that your site will get the ban hammer if you buy links that come from relevant sites. Despite the fact that Google doesn't like anyone buying links or trying to influence the rank of their site in any way, they often don't know the links are paid for because otherwise they wouldn't count. In any case, they would simply ignore the existence of these links, even if they found out they were paid for. Banning a site for merely advertising its links on other sites would not make sense. Remember that the exact same regulations for building links are applicable, even when you are purchasing links. Whether your links are bought or organic, always make sure they come from relevant sites.

You can profit from search engine optimization, but you have to be patient and learn how to do it right. If you find yourself not knowing what action to take, refer to a site or forum you trust and seek an answer that makes sense. As you keep trying, you may make mistakes here and there but your knowledge will increase until you are able to get your sites ranked well in the search engines.
