<div class='uawarticle'>There is a wide variety of time and attendance systems. These range from card based ones that are now considered archaic, to cutting edge biometric based software. No matter their complexity, age, cost or size, they all have a singular goal; track productivity. They are not meant to oppress, but to ensure fairness. It is unjust for anyone to expect pay for work that falls below expectations.<br />

Clock card machines have been in use since the early twentieth century. These use electronic or mechanical timepieces. In the latter, a a thick paper card that is known as a time sheet is inserted into a slot; this action caused it to hit a contact inside the machine. This would cause the contrivance to print an hour and date on the paper, allowing an employee to have a record of their working hours.<br />

The problem with these devices was that everything was manual and very tedious. Hours had to be painstakingly added up, and the right pay levels determined. Fortunately, modern contrivances make this easier in a lot of ways. Instead of a paper card, which can be damaged easily, a plastic one is used. This is very similar to the kind used in automated teller machines. The devices are also integrated into a corporation's payroll software, and a lot of the calculations are done automatically, saving minutes.<br />

In spite of all these advantages, all punch clock devices, ancient or modern, have a number of problems. Paper cards could get lost, dirty or soaked; their modern plastic counterparts can also be misplaced or get accidentally defaced, damaging the magnetic strip that records information. The biggest issue, however, is a practice called buddy punching. Employees can give their cards to friends, who will punch in for them.<br />

If this keeps happening too often, operational costs could spike uncontrollably. Many organizations solve this problem by charging workers for lost or damaged cards. However, information still has to be rewritten on the new cards, and this takes valuable moment. In case of a dispute, an employee could claim that the company manipulated their records.<br />

To solve these problems, many organizations are turning to biometric based devices. Instead of relying on removable cards, these use several attributes unique to each individual as identification. For instance, they may rely on fingerprints or retinal scans.<br />
<br />
By relying on these contrivances, a number of problems are solved. First on the list is that there are no more cards to lose, and thus no data needs to be rewritten. Also, no matter how strong a magnetic field is, there is little chance that it will render a fingerprint unreadable. These devices also put a stop to the practice of buddy punching; unless someone is willing to gouge out their eye or cut off their finger, they have to be where they say they are.<br />
<br />
Biometric based <A href="http://www.timecentre.com">time and attendance systems</A> generate extremely accurate records; because of their reliability, they are unlikely to formant disputes; the opposite is more likely to happen. Their high initial cost is offset by the wide range of benefits that they offer. They also ensure that every worker gets what they worked for.<br />
