Functional medicine is a form of alternative medicine which originated from the West. It focuses on recognizing and addressing the root cause of a particular chronic disease and fatigue. It also sees the human body as an integrated system, which works together. According to practitioners, therapy, prevention, and the origin of a chronic disease are important factors that they need to focus on and understand to be able to help others overcome their illness.

People who practice in this profession offer chronic care management. They strongly believe that nutrition, diet, and environmental contaminant exposure may lead to sickness, cause symptoms, and control the body's biochemical mediator activities. Practitioners also believe that their practice offer a positive long term effect to their patients. A system oriented method is used to engage both the patient and the practitioner.

This approach may seem to sound recent to some, but the idea of it all actually dates back to more than 20 years ago. A lot of medical professionals were uncertain in pursuing this field two decades ago. Further investigation, education, and teamwork made it possible for this method to be recognized. Chronically ill patients consider this approach in hopes of getting well.

Complex daily interactions within a person's environment, genetics, and way of life are the main drivers of a chronic disease. The approach focuses on these underlying causes. It also equips practitioners to assist their patients in taking control on these aspects of their daily lives.

Those who wish to use it must undergo a medical assessment. This helps determine the root cause of their illness. Inflammatory responses, spiritual and psychological symmetry, structural integrity, and immune system functions are often involved in the assessment. These provide practitioners an idea of their patients' routines and bodily functions.

To date, a lot of physicians and medical professionals support the functional medicine approach in helping patients who are over-fatigued. However, a continuing medical education is required for a medical professional to be able to practice it. The institute must be accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education for it to qualify as an institute for continuing medical education.
