Chemical dependency is a selfish disease and one n which the victim feels they are hurting no one but themselves. This is simply not the case because an addict can hurt all family members.<br />

Families are at a loss when it comes to helping the addict. In their efforts to help, they often enable more than rectify. Others refuse to face the fact that addiction has entered the life of their loved one. Without help and guidance, families can actually assist the addict into deeper depths of despair.<br />

Addiction, regardless of the type, most often has to be done through a rehab facility. These places will remove the addiction but once released the victim must stay clear of the trap of becoming addicted again. The family can help in this goal when they have learned the proper tools to use.<br />

Staying free of dependencies is the primary goal with the family playing a vital role in the cure. Your strength is exactly what they need when theirs is challenged.<br />

It takes courage to become an asset to an addict. First, you must step out of denial and the truth must be faced. If the addict is to survive; it becomes a family fought battle. The road is not an easy one. You have to turn a deaf ear to the pleas and lies an addict can relate to others in supporting their habit. A family may even have to disallow the addict residence in the family home.<br />

Al Anon has been in practice for a long number of years. Just as your addicted family member will say no to the dependency, you will say no their continued use of a dependent life style. They offer hope when you felt there was none.<br />
