You have probably been in a situation where you needed something and you simply could not find what you needed. It may have been a flashlight, or a small knife blade or even a screwdriver. You may have even needed personal protection at some point. However, to carry everything you may think you need would be burdensome, but you can begin to carry very common yet useful everyday items for a variety of tasks including tools and materials if you find yourself in a survival situation.

You probably do not want to be carrying around bulky items or an extra tote, so your items must be such that they can be worn on a neck chain, carried in your pockets or attached to your belt or purse. One word of caution, make sure any neck chains are designed to prevent choking if they catch on anything. Ensure the clasp will break or separate if there is tension put on it.

A quality knife is considered one of the most essential survival items, and in particular a knife that has multiple tools attached. You never know when you may need a pair of pliers or scissors or even a small file. The knife can be carried in a purse, pocket or in a sheath clipped to your belt.

Rope bracelets are very common today and many people call them survival bracelets because in a survival situation you can use the cordage to build shelters, fish and make repairs to gear or clothing. One paracord bracelet can provide between 6 and 10 feet and if you feel you would need more you can purchase a bigger bracelet or wear two. Paracord is unique in that it can be broken down into multiple strands for sewing or fishing line while still maintaining a sturdy core.

Having the means to start a fire can save your life. You may need to signal emergency responders or need a fire for warmth if your car breaks down in the wintertime along a deserted stretch of road. Magnesium sticks along with flint sticks or rods can be used to ignite tinder in practically any situation.

From survival manuals and listening to experts, you realize that fishing is the quickest way to obtain food, but you do not want to carry fishing tackle around with you on a daily basis. Fishing tackle can be made from various items, and one way to make a hook for emergency fishing is by using a paperclip. They can be carried on a key or neck chain and you can use your 550 paracord as fishing line. Paperclips are thin enough that for larger fish you can twist the pieces together using pliers, and then bend and shape into a hook. Sharpen the ends and use as an emergency sewing needle as well.

Carry your cell phone everywhere you go, not only for emergency calls but they can be used to help find you if you become trapped or otherwise incapacitated. Make sure your phone has its GPS tracking enabled and some phones even have a navigational tool that can help you find your way. Use the lighted screen as an emergency flashlight or carry a small penlight on your key or neck chain.

Personal protection is important and while you may not want to carry a firearm, a whistle or pepper spray can drive off an attacker in many cases. Stun guns are another option and some models are designed to look like everyday items, and can be clipped to a purse or belt. There are some brands of pepper spray designed for carrying on a key or neck chain.
