More Americans are homeless today than ever before

by Ryan Smurthweight

For the first time in American history the average age of a homeless person has moved from the age range of 55-64 to age 48-68, more and more people in this country are becoming homeless due to the lack of jobs, and at a younger age. The crushing economy, higher medical bills, and the ever growing cost of living have taken their toll on people of all ages and gender.

With the increase of aging baby boomers the need for more medical professionals will continue to rise as will the need for available health advocates for each health care member to navigate through the policy changes and what they may qualify for. Traditionally the government through Medicare has taken care of seniors; Medicare is the social insurance program funded entirely at the federal level and focuses on people 65 and older, persons with certain disabilities, and people of all ages with end stage renal disease- (when kidneys are only functioning at 10 to 15 percent of their normal capacity).

Currently more than 65 percent of baby boomers have been diagnosed with at least one chronic condition such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and hypertension; these conditions require routine doctor visits and taking prescribed medications, and as the baby boomers continue to get older their bodies won't be physically getting any healthier without serious changes to diet and exercise. If an effort to keep ones' medical bills low they might let symptoms of an illness go unchecked, which is far from wise, as it could make matters worse- a simple bladder infection can cause symptoms similar to senility or dementia, so avoiding a doctor to keep health care costs down is not an answer.

If you are retired or close too and will rely on government health care-Medicare, you should talk with a health advocate at Altegra Health, their Program Continuity Services provides continuous monitoring of social program eligibility and enrollment status to ensure appropriate access to benefits for which members are entitled including the Medicare Saving Advantage program where members apply for State Medicare Savings Programs that can help pay some of the member's health plan copayments.

Health care clients also love Altegra's Wellness Continuity Management solutions which enables health plans to gain a deeper understanding of the health of their members and provider networks in order to bring together the right benefits, the right care, and the right reimbursement. They achieve this through a comprehensive and integrated approach to member engagement, quality reporting, and risk adjustment programs.

As the baby boomer generation enters retirement there is no choice in the health care industry but to raise costs on health care due to the demand, however with that said, because supply and demand will eventually even up the programs available for low-income individuals, low-income subsidy will also keep up with demand, which allows all baby boomers/seniors to work with a health advocate at Altegra and apply for those programs which allows members to participate in Medicare Advantage programs saving them thousands of dollars in medical costs.
