In today's day and age, the target market is everything. Regardless if you are selling a product or service, you need to have a greater grasp on the individuals you are trying to reach. "Men in the age bracket of 20-50? certainly will not work anymore. Below are a few elements to help you redefine your potential clients.

1.) New business or recurring customers?

This initial basic question is at times forgotten. You will end up treating new clients in a different way compared to those who have formerly done business with you. In most cases you'd probably have distinct things to ask and you're gathering different information from each of these types.

2.) Demographics or details your customers could have in common

-gender

-age

-marital status

-employment status

-income

-children

3.) Geography- where do your prospects reside? It may be broad (aka the United States), it may be smaller (down to the city, neighborhood, etc) or it could be a blend of both

4.) Way of life & Behaviors- this could be hobbies, patterns, likes and dislikes, activities, spending patterns etc. Here are some examples:

-where does he/she shop at? Do they visit the mall, outlets or do they shop online?

-house pets or no pets? (which kinds?)

-entertainment choices (movie genres, dining varieties, music interests)

-habitual activities (gym 3x/wk, skis in the winter, goes boating in the summertime, vacations often, etc)

-do they listen to audio books, drink, associate with a religion, go out with close friends, spend time at their kids' games, etc

After you have done the research, gathered the information and identified your prospective customers,

consider these questions:

1.) Are there enough individuals in my target market?

2.) Will the target market be conscious of the importance in my product? Will they benefit from it?

3.) Can they pay for my goods and services?

4.) In what way will I reach my target audience? What method are they going to best respond to?

Good luck with your target audience research efforts!
