Unique Content Article: The Guayabera: Where It All Began

The Guayabera: Where It All Began

by Rosanna McGuire

The guayabera is an extremely well-known article of clothing. People from Latino cultures are all familiar with it, and some even call it the national shirt of Cuba (although there are those who argue that it could be the same for Mexico). Its design is gaining adherents even now, as younger peoples come across it.

The design has not exactly stayed static, however. A Cuban peasant's shirt, it is claimed, served as the inspiration for the pattern. It has come a long way from that, as you can see from the variations available today.

It is traditionally menswear made for warm climates. There are usually two vertical stripes on it. Nearly all variations have four pockets too.

There has yet to be a satisfactory explanation for the four pockets, in fact. Obviously, they were intended to act as storage units for convenient carriage of various items, but no one really knows what people carried in them during the old days. Some even say people used to load small fruit into the pockets for easy snacking or while taking a walk through orchards or places with fruit trees.

At any rate, the beach wedding shirt, as it is often called, is one that was developed in order to be a convenient fit for its environment. Its lightweight construction makes it the perfect dress for warmer climates, relieving people of the burden that heavy textiles can become in high heat. Should you also happen to require pocket space, there are the four pockets ready and waiting.

It is also fashionable. We cannot chalk up all of its attractions to its utility, after all. And these days, there are over a dozen variants of it that you can try out for specific occasions or needs.

The formal types are made out of more costly fabrics, for instance. The sleeves on these versions generally run all the way to the wrist. These versions are also often more elaborate in their decorative banding or embroidery.

There are even kiddy versions. Aside from the tiny sizing, there are not often a lot of differences in the actual design from the original here. These are perfect for ensuring that your kids always look their best but do not have to suffer the stifling weight of heavy clothes or fabrics on them.

There are even dress versions being made now for women. These days, you will discover more and more girls wearing these shirts and dresses. More and more women have been seen sporting shirts and dresses modeled after the traditional four-pocket design.

The Cuban shirt is an ever-changing design, and we cannot know what to expect of it in the future. It is not inconceivable that you shall be confronted with something like ten more versions of it in the near future, so you can just look forward to that if you love this shirt design. Considering that even leather coat versions of it have already shown up, who knows what else you shall be able to buy in this design next?
