Becoming a freelancer is really exciting. At the same time, however, becoming a freelancer is also terrifying. When you are a freelancer, you cannot always predict where your income is going to be coming from. Think about it for a minute: the simple act of declaring yourself a freelancer isn't enough to get the clients or the money rolling in. You actually need to do the work of getting out there. You are in charge of your income, which means that you are also in charge of your success. This is something that scares a lot of people. If you actually get out there and take action, though, you should find those first clients and jobs before you know it. Here are a few things you can try.

Don't believe anyone who tells you that you have to work for free when you start out. When you offer your services for free, you will only start attracting people who are seeking freebies. There's nothing wrong with working for a good cause that you believe in out of charity. This is actually a kind of donation, and is tax deductible. Aside from this, however, there is zero reason to ever work for free. Do not listen to the people who tell you that you need to "work your way up" or that you need to "work to build a portfolio." There's nothing wrong with extending a helping hand once in a while. But don't let anybody scam you out of a paycheck by telling you it's for your own good.

Use whatever connections you have made both personally and professionally. Make contact with them and let them know that you've started to freelance. Let them know how glad you'll be if they recommend you to their friends and acquaintances. Share with them how thankful you would be if they don't forget you, as a potential hire. If you pursue you're the people in your network, you can help yourself. Get started with people you are acquainted with whom will actually be able to take advantage of your services or people who have services that match well with the services you'll be making available. You might not have a very contacts large list to start out with, although it will get larger as time goes on.

Many freelancers start out with prices that are too low. Trying to grab more clients by pricing yourself cheaper than the competition is a strategy that has some serious drawbacks. For one thing, working your way up out of low rates is incredibly difficult to do. Another problem is that many potentially good clients will avoid you, thinking you offer low quality because of your prices. It's better to set fair prices, even when you're starting out. You'll be glad you made this choice in the future.

If you want to attract the notice of clients for your freelancing services, you can do this in many different ways. Don't feel that you have to start out with a Rolodex full of clients eager to hire you. Thankfully, even if you don't have those things you won't have to struggle for long. Use these tips and keep your nose to the grindstone. You'll get to where you want to go!
