Instead of hosting an ordinary party that lacks any real creativity, take things up a notch and host an event with a crazy theme. Everyone enjoys a good beer, so capitalize on this idea and create a fun Oktoberfest party. This is a great, casual theme that is sure to please all of your guests.

Of course, the first step is to consider the choices of beer. Instead of going with ordinary canned domestic brews, purchase an assortment of fine, German beers or some fancy American microbrews. You can even set up a tasting bar, where guests can try different stouts, ales and other varieties.

If you are having children present or perhaps a few people who don't drink beer, purchase some fun gourmet ginger beers and root beers for those guests. Also consider having a few bottles of wine on hand for those who want alcohol but not beer. Another idea is to serve up a Shandy to those who don't really love beer. This is a mix of beer and lemon-lime soda, popular in Germany and throughout Europe.

Hearty German fare, such as a variety of flavorful sausages and a huge bowl of warm potato salad make great buffet items. A platter of giant soft pretzels can be accompanied with spicy mustard. Fill soup tureens with beer and cheese soup or perhaps a spicy chili con carne flavored with beer. For dessert, consider a platter of savory German pastries or Black Forest-style cupcakes.

For decorations, think about traditional blue and white. Cover long picnic tables with gingham cloths in shades of white and blue and use this same cloth for your buffet, as well. Use beer steins to hold items such as forks, knives and spoons. Consider using a huge barrel as a decoration, as well. You can also find cute string lights in the shape of beer mugs, which are a lot of fun.

In addition to beer mug lights, why not buy beer mugs or beer pilsner glasses that light up? These LED bar glasses come in several different colors and will transform your party into a truly exciting event. You can opt for clear glasses, color-changing glasses or perhaps glasses in one single glowing color, such as blue to fit with the blue and white color theme.
