Death is inevitable for all. But understanding that fact doesn't make it less painful for the surviving loved ones. Still, when the time has come for a family member to die, we have to arrange their funeral. There are a lot of things that have to be organised in a memorial service. And perhaps the most expensive thing in the service is the casket. In Singapore, caskets cost from a thousand dollars and up, depending on the kind and make.

Caskets, or sometimes interchangeably referred to as coffins because they have the same use, hold the body of the dead person. Caskets and coffins have slight distinctions, however. A casket is a rectangular box that has a similar width and height from top to bottom and is typically padded with split lid for viewing, while a coffin is pointed from the middle to bottom and with a broader width at the shoulder and narrower at the head.

Most coffins are created from wood, while caskets are either from wood or metal. The most regular kinds of wood used for caskets are oak, pine, mahogany, and maple. And as for metal, stainless steel and copper are the most frequently used. Of course, caskets can also be made from pricey materials like gold and platinum, though they are usually custom-built and bought ahead of time.

The material used to create the casket doesn't matter for a lot of people, though, since they base their selection on the appearance and colour of the casket. There are full-couch and half-couch caskets, which dictate their external lid. Full-couch means the full body of the demised can be displayed, while half-couch allows the exposure of only the upper body portion. Traditional casket colours include white, black, grey, and in the natural wooden veneer. There are people who prefer a non-traditional veneer, and purchase caskets in eye-catching colours.

In Singapore, a lot of funeral homes offer Casket services along with other funeral necessities. Caskets aren't refundable after use, of course, but there are memorial homes that allow casket rental for those who select cremation since caskets are only needed during the funeral service for the viewing. Fitting and delivery are also normally included in most casket services in Singapore if the family of the demised opted not to buy from the funeral home.
