The skin of the chin sometimes has a tendency to develop a rough and coarse texture as many people age. Some people say that the texture of the chin, in these cases, is somewhat similar to the texture of an orange peel. In addition, it's not uncommon for many people to have a horizontal chin crease. These creases tend to deepen and become more pronounced as they age.

The name for this particular type of creasing in the skin is a mental crease. The primary cause of this skin problem in the chin area is the mentalis muscle. If the lines are too pronounced or too plentiful, then dermal fillers are not up to the task. An easy, affordable, and targeted solution to this type of problem can be met head on with Botox.

It is injected into the mentalis muscle to treat this condition. Usually, your physician will inject two separate injections near the tip of the chin on either side of the midline. As for the horizontal chin crease, the same action of the mentalis muscle tends to draw the skin of the chin upward, exaggerating this crease. The injection into the muscle can relax the mentalis and make it look less dominant. In other words, the severity of the horizontal chin crease will be reduced.
Botox and the Jaw

Reducing a disproportioned jaw is now a possibility with a non-invasive procedure, thanks to this solution. The jaw muscle is impacted directly through the jaw reduction. A muscle that has a tendency to grow quite large is called the masseter. This is the muscle that is responsible for controlling the jaw during eating.

Women who feel as though their jaws are too square or masculine are the most common groups seeking treatment for jaw reduction. This trait is often caused by the large muscle responsible for the eating motion. The doctor injects into the masseter, during the jaw reduction procedure. This ends up putting the muscle into a relaxed state. Just as it relaxes frown lines in the forehead and crow's feet at the corners of the eye, this treatment also relaxes the masseter muscle so that it appears softer and smaller.

Botox jaw augmentation offers a less invasive solution to oversized jaws, when compared to surgical jaw reduction.

Your Face after Botox

You may see small red dots on the skin in the treated area after the injections. It's not very common, but some patients reported instances of minor bruising or swelling. However, any blemish can easily be covered up with a bit of make-up and will fade within a few hours of the procedure.

When Does Botox Wear Off?

Most patients find that the effects of the injections last approximately three to six months. Of course, patient follow up depends on the type of treatment performed and the extent of the problem area. But it's pretty typical for a patient to come several times during the first year. And then periodically for follow up in the subsequent years. With subsequent visits, it takes less to maintain that relaxation of the muscle.
